Repair on the newsgroup servers is on the back burner at the moment,
however they are being looked into. The servers are almost at their end of
life and there are currently no plans to upgrade them. It may be best to
invest in a 3rd party newsgroup account.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
why should we pay for 3rd party....internet already costs too much
You must be a socialist like that Goodmanson guy too. Access to the internet
isn't a human right its what capitalism is all about. Quit whining and find
another business that'll make you happier - although I have a feeling
that'll never happen.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you will be in the same boat with MTS
as far as retention/completion rate. They are not much better and you will
need to subscribe to a 3rd party newsgroup account. The difference with MTS
is that they don't enforce any limit(within reason) versus Shaw where you
are limited to 60GB on the regular high speed.

When I switched over to MTS High Speed from Shaw about a year ago I was told
that there was no download limit (Shaw's limit at that time was 60
GB/month).

There is a limit of 2 connections to the nntp server which is peered through
Highwinds Media Group (MTS doesn't have their own nntp server). Each
connection has a maximum speed of around 500 kilobits/second when
downloading binaries. Headers usually download at about 5 megabits/second.

Completion rates and retention period is way better than Shaw's.

It was definitely worth the switch.

There is a download/usage limit with MTS as well.Check your TOS.The big
difference is that they don't really enforce it unless you go really
overboard,say a terabyte a month.As for completion/retention,I don't see
such a big difference and I use both outfits.Depending on where you are
located in the city, each company can be better. In my area,Shaw has a poor
download speed and MTS was much faster but some people are having very poor
speed lately around here with MTS as well.Other areas,it is the other way
around. But with either company,if you intend to download large files and
especially items that have been split in many binary files, you will need a
third party newsgroup account. For the odd file, each company is similar,ie
poor completion.

My experience is Shaw for binaries, and torrents for that matter, was
pathetic, unacceptable, and I made the switch....MTS is great by
comparison.
Mts retention is maybe 2 to 3 days. Completion rate is very good, say
98%, rarely do I need to use the par files.
AS mentioned, unless you download way more than they allow, you won't
be bothered.
Sure the speed could be faster, having said that, if it where, I
probably wouldn't be able to browse the net without some lag,
bandwidth is bandwidth. I let it run all night.

For me it's not worth spending $10 on giganews or whatever since its
been so good.

Grabit has proven to get the fastest speeds for me.
I use Agent as a reader.

I agree its definately worth the switch.

Thank you much for your input. I was getting near to 100 Gigs permonth for

to get 20 Gigs and that is when it is working properly. Been with Shaw
since it's inception, never needed a 3rd party. People that suggest that

I have been with Shaw for many, many years as well, actually from the days of
Videon(??? spelling) and although today I use both Shaw and MTS and get
better speed on my MTS account,I can easily download on either service
60GB(which is my limit on Shaw regular high speed) or more with MTS as they
don't enforce their limit. As for your comment regarding 3rd party,I'm not
that young and certainly not rich and find it quite uneducated for someone
asking a question in here.If you are going to make smart ass remarks on
something you obviously fail to understand, why bother asking in here.It just
makes you look even more like a dumb ass, lol. The only way you can
consistently download substantial amount of binaries from the
newsgroup, especially the big name NG's is with a third party
application. Most large files are incomplete on either Shaw or MTS and even
going through several servers,it is a losing battle.I pay $10/month extra
with Astraweb and get as much as I want.

Sounds like Shaw is going the same route as Rogers. It also sounds like
they don't want our money. Considering it's a relatively easy fix it
further sounds like they are both lazy and greedy.

They don't get this is a customer driven industry. If they don't
provide what the customer wants then the customer goes elsewhere.

Later
Mike

P.S. There are free, low speed, read only news servers out there.

There is no mximum download on MTS. Their servers have long retention as
well (I've searched for and found binary files in some groups that are 50
days old!). The down side? Max two connections and max 100K/s combined. Me,
I use a premium news server and make MTS my 'backup' for stuff that's
missing or old.

According to my current stats, I've downloaded 2.76 G and uploaded 4.13G in
the last 49 hours and 53 minutes. Extrapolate that to a 720 hour month and
that puts me into the range of 40GB down and 60 GB up for the month. Which
is all the bandwidth I need.

I am not aware of any download limitations / month but
MTS only allows 2 connections and download is limited to approx
90 -110kb/sec

it really sucks

no one wants to offer any real support for newsgroups and why...........
to prevent massive bandwidth problems on their networks
or it may cost too much to outsource to other newservers........

I've been paying for third party newsgroups for well over a year. Yeah It's
more money but it's a reliable service. This way I can bounce around
between MTS and Shaw and make use of their promotions.

They want to screw me over, I'll do the same.
